Ocean to Ocean by Bike—A Dream of a Lifetime.
For the past 20 to 25 years I have been dreaming—fantasizing—about biking across the country. Finally, after retiring I decided to do it. Filled with excitement, and apprehension, I signed up for the America by Bicycle “Cross Country Challenge” ride going from San Francisco, CA to Portsmouth, NH (from 4 June 2011 to 26 July, 2011). The dream started those many years ago when a colleague took a couple of months off when his son graduated college and he took him on a cross country bike ride.
I have always been an avid recreational cyclist and have done several organized long rides or tours, including the Segull Century in Salisbury, Maryland 5 times; a century ride around Lake Tahoe; and twice VeloSport Vacation's Ride Provence, a 5-day biking vacation with day rides anchored in Maulaucene in Provence culminating in a climb of Mont Ventoux—1920 meters over 22 km. But I have never done anything coming close to a tour across the country.
As I go along the tour, I hope to provide a log of the trip's experiences. I've organized this website so the tabs align with the segments of the tour, with a subpage for each day (if you hover the cursor on a tab you'll see a drop-down menu with all the days in that segment). I'll try to include pictures as much as possible, and in addition, I will also include a link to the day's route on a map and the ride profile (altitude, speed, temperature) which I will be downloading to the Garmin Connect website (see an example on the Prologue page).
